A conservation quality picture frame is a specially designed frame that offers protection and preservation for valuable artworks. They are often bespoke made by hand and use materials and techniques that prioritize the long-term preservation of the framed artwork, preventing damage from environmental factors, aging, and deterioration.

The frame itself is typically made from high-quality materials, such as solid wood or metal, chosen for their durability and resistance to decay. These materials are often sourced from sustainable and environmentally-friendly sources. The frame is carefully constructed to provide stability and strength, ensuring the artwork is securely held in place.

One of the key features of a conservation quality picture frame is the use of acid-free and lignin-free materials for mounting and matting. These materials prevent the transfer of harmful chemicals that can cause discoloration, fading, or deterioration of the artwork. Acid-free mats, backing boards and backing tape help maintain a neutral pH environment, protecting the artwork from acidic degradation over time. Where used, it is important the self adhesive is also acid free conservation quality in order to prevent damage and discolouration to the artwork. We often use a fine acid-free cloth tape, which is water activated and pH neutral and just as importantly, reversible, should future custodians which to change the mount and frame to their taste / environment.

It’s not just the frame, backing and mount that must be conservation quality, all materials used must be pH neutral.

In addition, conservation picture frames are sometimes equipped with UV-resistant glazing. This feature helps to block harmful ultraviolet rays that can fade and damage the artwork. The glazing also acts as a barrier against dust, moisture, and pollutants, keeping the artwork clean and safeguarded.

A conservation quality picture frame is designed to create an archival environment for the artwork, ensuring its longevity and preserving its visual integrity. It offers a combination of aesthetic appeal and conservation benefits, providing a secure and protective display for valuable or sentimental pieces to be enjoyed for many years.
